Opening the research log

A place for the questions, instruments, and false starts behind our study of generalised Langton’s ants.

A short rule can produce a very long story. This log will follow the work of trying to understand that story: how a deterministic ant explores its grid, why different rules build different territories, and what a convincing explanation would need to predict.

Our central question is about the apparent cube-root growth of many chaotic rules. We also care about exceptions, the patterns left inside a territory, and the relationship between the ant’s local turns and its large-scale motion.

What an entry should give you

  • A question. What uncertainty motivated the work?
  • A test. Which prediction, control, or comparison could resolve it?
  • A research trail. Where are the code, parameters, seeds, and results?
  • A limit. What remains unexplained, and what would change our mind?

The detailed lab notebooks remain alongside their experiments. This is a place to make the reasoning easier to follow, including the false starts. This opening entry reports no new measurements.

As investigations develop, we’ll write about the mechanisms being tested, the calibration of our instruments, and cases that resist the current picture. Any numerical result will point back to a reproducible experiment rather than live only in a blog post.
